They were printed in Un-sets but they're black bordered, so they're definitely tournament legal.
All you lot really need to do to prove that to your friend is to evidence him any tournament feature match. Unhinged nuts in particular are probably the most pop basics among tournament players.

If they weren't tournament legal how exactly would the island from unhinged exist 5 dollars apiece N/Chiliad on starcity? Answer: It would still exist a dollar tops. They are tournament legal because they are black-bordered.

And so if y'all were using white bordered basic lands they wouldn't count? Despite being a legal CARD?

White and black borders are fine, silver and gilt are not. Additionally, at that place aren't any silvery bordered basic lands and the merely gold bordered ones don't have normal magic backs on them. I'm willing to bet that a T.O. or a judge would be ok with the gold ones if they were in nighttime enough sleeves though.

As a general rule of thumb, gold bordered, argent bordered and gold dorsum bordered cards are not tournament legal. Additionally, cards printed in older sets, reprinted in current sets are likewise legal in tournament AND...
There are a few exceptions for cards that meet legal criteria (black or white borders) that are Not legal for whatever constructed sanctioned play. Those include dexdarity cards, ante cards and special promotional cards (i.e.: 1996 World Champion, Proposal, etc).

Until the Zendikar full frame lands came out, the Un full frame lands were amid the virtually pop basic lands. At present, they accept a bit of competition. People like them considering they are bonny, tournament legal, and, nosotros all know what lands do.

Which are simply fine for casual if in opaque protectors, just are definitely not tournament legal. To be tournament legal, they have to accept either the classic Magic back, or be a DFC.
